Troy Buchanan High wrestling team participated in the district wrestling tournament at Francis Howell and when the competition ended, the dreams of three members came true.
Districts are the beginning of the end of the high school wrestling season and where high hopes collide with reality. All the hard work to make it to the state tournament can come to an end in one match.
Jacob Kaibel was the only Troy wrestler to make it to the finals with five others made it to the ‘bubble’ match-win, go to state, lose and go to state to watch. Junior, Colt Schuman (113 lb.) made it to the bubble match but fell short as did senior, Kyle Hamilton (132 lb.) and junior, Johnny Pulliam (285 lb.).
Kaibel, a senior, fought his way to the finals, pinning all of his opponents. During the finals match, in a flurry of back and forth scoring, Kaibel ended up short, placing second and earning his first trip to state. Tim Hoffman, a senior at 160 pounds, lost a close one-point match in the semifinals. This placed him in the wrestlebacks and he rallied to collect a bronze medal and his second trip to state. In the 220 pound class senior Christian Gillespie stood his ground to make it to the semifinals where he was outscored. He moved to the wrestlebacks and pushed his way to earn the bronze medal and his first trip to state.
