Both varsity basketball teams at Troy Buchanan continue to search for the keys to winning basketball as they continue on a downward spiral. In boys’ basketball, the Trojans lost 66-49 to Fort Zumwalt South in GAC conference play and on the following evening, they lost 58-28 to Lafayette in the GAC Challenge Shootout at the Family Arena in St. Charles.

Preston Whitfield led the South Bulldogs to their win over Troy with Marshawn Blackmon following with 18 points. Blackmon also had 13 rebounds. JD Powell and Adam Mennemeyer led Troy with 17 and 11 points each. Powell had five rebounds.

After a closely contested first period where South led 12-10, they put some distance between the teams with a 15-6 scoring edge to take a 27-20 halftime lead. The Trojans battled more competitively in the second half but were unable to stage that winning rally.

Against Lafayette, it was a different story. The Lancers raced to a 17-5 lead after one period enroute to the 30-point win. They increased it to 38-14 at the half and 48-21 after three periods.

Mennemeyer led Troy with 11 points and Powell followed with 10 points. Nate Messer led Lafayette with 21 points followed by Ross Houldsworth with 16 points.

In girls’ action, Fort Zumwalt South built a 36-20 lead in three periods before Troy got their game together with a 21-13 scoring edge in the final period. Alyssa Rivera led Troy with 8 points followed by Miranda Chaney, McKala Lawler and Haley Meyer with seven points each.
