Troy R-III sweeps division crowns, seeded first in districts

The Troy Buchanan High basketball teams recently claimed the titles in the South Division of the Gateway Athletic Conference. The Lady Trojans improved their record to 9-0 in the conference with a 62-32 win over Wentzville Timberland and followed that four nights later with a 64-59 win over Marquette in a non-conference game. Three players finished in double figures in the Timberland win led by Madeline Thoroughman with 16, McKala Lawler (12 pts.) and Haley Meyer (10 pts.). Sam Domalewski led Timberland with 23 points.

Troy strong, building an 18-4 lead after one period and 47-23 lead after three periods enroute to the win. In the win over Marquette, the Lady Mustangs’ duo of Ashley Ploudre and Taylor Campbell finished with 21 and 18 points respectively. Troy was paced by Mimi Henderson and Haley Meyer with 15 points each with McKala Lawler finishing with 14 points. The key quarter for Troy was the first as they held a 15-8 lead before Marquette cut it to four 26-22 at the half. Troy held only a 38-37 edge in scoring in the second half.

In the win over Timberland, the Trojans had four players in double figures led by Landon Mills and JD Powell with 18 each. Kyle Westerman and Ben Chaney finished with 15 and 11 points respectively. Chaney hauled down 10 rebounds and six assists as did Mills. Powell made eight of 10 attempts from the field including both attempts (2/2) beyond the arc. As a team, Troy shot just over 50 percent from the field and as a team, they had 14 steals on defense. The Trojans had a very good first half, building a 34-14 lead at intermission.

In the loss to DeSmet, the Spartans jumped out to a 22-10 lead in the opening period but the Trojans trimmed the deficit to five (35-30) at the half. Powell finished the game with 22 points and Mills followed with 18 points. Alex Bausch scored 23, Jimmy Barton 17 and Nolan Berry 12 points for the Spartans.

This week, both Troy teams will compete in the Class 5 district tourney at Francis Howell. Both received the top seed in their divisions. The girls will play Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. versus the Wentzville Holt-Timberland winner. The Trojans will play Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. vs. either Wentzville Holt or Francis Howell.
