The Troy Story Mission Team plans to bring more than 400 teenagers and adults to Troy, Mo. to improve the homes of local residents. Elderly, handicapped, military families and lower-income residents of Troy will get free home repairs. As many as 80 local residents will benefit from the work of a projected 500 adult and teenage volunteers at the Troy Story Workcamp coming to Troy, from July 21-27. The workcamp will provide free home repairs through the Group Cares program, sponsored locally by the churches of Lincoln County.

Group Cares is a non-profit, interdenominational Christian volunteer home-repair organization headquartered in Loveland, Colorado. This summer, an anticipated 25,000 young people and adults will participate in 48 workcamps in communities across the United States and Canada.

At each workcamp, teenagers and adults – all members of church youth groups – volunteer a week of their time to repair homes throughout the community. This represents about 12,000 hours of volunteer labor – with a total economic impact to the community of over $300,000.00.

“These really are remarkable young people,” said Jeff Thompson, of Group Cares. “Each one is actually paying for the privilege of working in your community. Workcamp registration fees are used to cover our costs for food, insurance, and building materials.”

The workcamp will be housed at Troy Buchanan High School with workcampers sleeping on classroom floors, eating in the cafeteria, and enjoying evening programs in the gym. “This service to the community would be impossible without the wonderful cooperation of the Lincoln County R-III School District. Group Cares will reimburse all costs to the lodging facility.

The Troy Story is led by Barb Jones, Norma Guyot, Rob Bruce and George Tucker, all members of churches in Troy, and previous workcampers. They have all seen the impact that a workcamp can have on a community and it was on a Mission Trip similar to this one that they decided to bring the opportunity to Troy. The Troy Story has been in the planning stages for nearly two years and the arrival of the youth is anxiously awaited.
