Troy Trojans improved their record to 3-3 with a 56-41 win over Wentzville Holt. Seniors Landon Mills and Ben Chaney led the way for Troy with 25 and 14 points respectively. Mills also had six rebounds and three blocks defensively. Tanner Ludwig and JD Powell had four steals apiece for Troy. Powell scored 9 points for Troy. Brett Smith led Wentzville with 10 points.
Holding a 12-11 lead after one period, the Trojans outscored the Indians 44-30 over the next three quarters for the win. As a team, Troy shot just over 47 percent from the field while the Indians shot 42 percent
“It was a good overall effort,” said Troy Coach Ryan Meyers. “I thought we really guarded well and forced some tough shots by Holt. We were able to create some turnovers which led to some easy baskets. I think we are starting to play more as a team on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. We will need to continue to play together if we want to be successful this year.”
Troy played without senior guard Will Johnson (disciplinary) and Ryan Cockrell (concussion). Tanner Ludwig started his first game, hitting a three-point field goal. Mills and Chaney also had three-pointers in the game.
In their previous game, Troy traveled across state to play Liberty North High School and lost 51-35. Chaney scored 15 points and he and teammate Kyle Westermann had five rebounds each. Shooting only 30 percent from the field was also a contributing factor in the loss.
In girls’ action, Kacy Escheiler scored 21 points and had 7 rebounds to lead St. Charles West to a 44-43 win over the Troy Lady Trojans. Madeline Thoroughman led Troy with 12 points. Ayssa Schrader followed with 9, Hannah Henderson with 8 and Haley Meyer with 7 pts. Meyer had five rebounds. Thoroughman and Meyer had had four steals each as Troy held a 15-4 edge in this category. Mimi Henderson led Troy in assists with five. As a team. Troy struggled, making 15 of 48 attempts. West had 21 turnovers to Troy’s nine.
Troy jumped out into a 10-4 lead in the first period but West cut it down to two (21-19) by halftime. They took the lead in the third period, keying the win.
