While most everyone else was relaxing and enjoying time off after the celebration of Christ’s birth, the Troy Buchanan wrestlers were preparing for another weekend battle. The wrestlers traveled to Lindbergh for the Flyer Classic Tournament. Teams trekked from Kansas City, Kentucky and as far as Georgia to take part in these holiday festivities.
The competition was tough and the Troy wrestlers fought to hold their own. The tournament was on Friday and Saturday. Friday, 24 teams were put in to four pools. Each team in the pool would wrestle a dual style meet. The top four wrestlers from each pool would face off Saturday. Saturday was set up as a 16-man bracket with the top six earning medals.
The tournament had unified teams. These teams were made of wrestlers from different teams, allowing more than one wrestler from the same school to wrestle in the tournament. This being the case in the 285-pound class, Johnny Pulliam, a senior, and Austin Robertson, a junior, each earned medals. Pulliam earned sixth and Robertson fought for fourth.
Two other Troy wrestlers placed fourth. Nick Schulte in the 120-pound class and Kurtis Meyers, a senior, in the 160-pound class. Both wrestlers fought hard throughout the tournament to finish a respectable fourth place medal.
Wyatt Haze, a senior in the 182-pound class, was Troy’s only finalist. Haze has been showing up with a winning attitude all season. Even so, Haze battled tough and suffered his first loss of the season, finishing in second.
There are still a few openings in the lineup that should be filled soon. Hopefully, with the Coaches’ experience and the seniors continuing to step up as leaders, the team will pull together and perform even better. Overall the Troy wrestlers finished eighth as a team.
