While most folks were recovering from Christmas, the Troy Buchanan High School wrestlers were back on the mats
battling in the Flyers Holiday Wrestling Tournament at Lindbergh High School. Last year the tournament involved 12 teams but this year, expanded to 20 teams. Some of the competitors came from Arkansas, Springfield, Mo. and Kansas City. This built the stage up for some great matches.
The tournament spanned two days with the teams placed into different pools on the first day. Each team wrestled another team in a dual format, as many as four matches the first day. The top two wrestlers earned spots in the eight-man bracket for the championships held on the second day.
At 152 pounds for Troy Buchanan, senior Jake Kaibel had a great showing. Kaibel dominated everyone he faced, most matches ending in pins. He ended his championship match with a pin to take home gold. Tim Hoffman, a senior at 160 pounds, also had a great performance. Last year in the 170-pound class, he earned silver. This year he earned gold.
Troy had medalists in the 120-pound weight class with junior Nick Schulte finishing sixth. Other medalists included: Dusty Heisse, 5th, 170-pound class; Christian Gillespie, 5th, 220 pound class and Cody Miller, 6th, heavyweight. All these athletes are seniors.
Overall, the Trojans placed fourth as a team. Coaches Pat Nichols, Gary Peterson and George Hovis are working hard to improve all wrestlers. All wrestlers must focus on improving if they want to make a showing at the state tournament in February.
