at Lindenwood University. Troy’s season ended at 19-10 but overall, it was another successful year on the hardcourt.

Junior JD Powell led Troy with 17 points in the loss. Ben Chaney and Landon Mills scored nine and eight points in their last high school game with Ryan Cockrell the only other Trojan to score, finishing with three points. Brad Woodson led the Golden Griffons with 10 points. Sean O’Brien had 16 rebounds for Vianney.

The teams battled on nearly even terms in the first half with the Trojans scoring two late field goals for a 17-13 lead at the half. After Troy built their lead to 20-14 early in the third period, Vianney surged ahead with eight unanswered points. Powell’s field goal would put Troy ahead 23-22 but Tanner Cochran rolled in a field goal which put Vianney ahead to stay.

Troy Coach Ryan Meyers, though disappointed with the loss, said the Trojans left nothing on the floor.

“I am really proud of this group of players and our five seniors,” he said. “They have a great year and certainly one tough loss does not define the season especially when you consider the team ended up with 19 wins, won our fifth conference championship in a row and our third district in a row. Vianney is a good team and their size inside and physical play took its toll on us in the second half. In a low scoring game like that, one or two plays will determine the winner of the game and Vianney had the ball bounce their way. I thought our kids played extremely hard and really battled but we just needed to make a few more shots and have a few things to go our way in order to win.” Troy had advanced with a 53-40 win over Wentzville Timberland in the district final at Francis Howell. They had a balanced attack led by Chaney (14), Mills (13), Cockrell (12) and Powell (10). A 23-9 edge in scoring in the final period broke up a tight game for the Trojans.

“I was really happy for our seniors to see all of the hard work they had put in pay off with a district championship,” said Meyers. “The key for us was defensively and getting big stops and turnovers in the fourth which lead to easy baskets. We were able to have balanced scoring. Ryan really set up and hit some timely three’s and JD Powell had 10 pts. in the final quarter. It is always exciting to have the opportunity to play post season basketball. As for the season, we finished 9-1 in conference play and that makes five years in a row we have won conference (a 30-4 conference record during that time), and a total of six of the past seven years as conference champions. I think that is a tribute to the hard work of the players over the years and their ability to compete at a high level on a consistent basis.
