Winfield Warriors improved their record to 14-5 as they claimed the title in the Bowling Green Tournament. The win came in a 55-43 victory over Louisiana. David Bauer and Joel Krato led the Warriors with 18 and 10 points each. Kato also led in rebounds with seven.
Winfield jumped out into a 20-11 lead in the opening period, a key as the Bulldogs stubbornly kept within reach the remainder of the game.
“We played well defensively for the most part,” said Coach Chuck Arnold. “Anytime you win while making only one of 12 from beyond the arc, for us especially, is a good sign. We are learning to win with defense. Dave played well attacked the rim all night, all of our kids did. We didn’t play real well offensively, but found a way to win which is a good sign for this time of year. This is the first “gold” for our kids in my four years, so we have a taste of what it feels like”
In earlier pre-tournament games, Bauer scored 18 points and three teammates were in double figures in a 72-45 win. Krato had 12 points with Dakota Robertson and Travis Sommerlad followed with 10 points each.
On Jan. 19, they lost 58-53 to Orchard Farm. Aaron Aubuchon led Winfield with 15 points and nine rebounds. Winfield trailed 48-38 after three periods and rallied in the final period with a 15-10 edge in scoring but the rally fell short.
