On Saturday, May 31, the Wind Ridge Farmers’ Alliance will hold its second farmers’ market of the year on Main Street in Eolia, Mo. Hours there are 7:30 a.m. – 12 noon and this is a rescheduling from May 24 due to the holiday.
The market will feature a large feather swap and buyers of surplus hens and rooters and other cull stock will be on hand. Poultryman Supply will also be in attendance with variety of hard to locate poultry supplies. This market will feature a large number of starter and baby chicks including some quite rare varieties.
A number of veteran poultry producers will be on hand and can advise on matters from selecting and culling laying birds to creating specialty ventures such as producing pigeons for squabs or the production of heirloom turkeys. Several speakers at the Spring Poultry Expo noted that far too many hens were being retained past their laying prime and were adding to the cost of producing eggs as a result. More egg producers need to learn how to evaluate hens and to then cull those not producing.
A number of veteran market gardeners will also be in attendance. A variety of plants and Spring produce should be available though this growing season has been much delayed by cool and inclement weather. Contact numbers for this market are 573-485-7261, 573-324-5354 or 660-998-0445.
