After a long hard-fought season, the Winfield Lady Warrior volleyball team finished with an 12-8 regular season record, second place in the newly entered GAC North and many post-season accolades. In the school’s first season in the GAC conference the Lady Warriors finished with a 5-3 record behind only St. Charles West and had three players voted to all-conference teams. Sophomore setter Jacyln Sommerlad and freshman middle hitter Katie Burkemper were both second team selections. Sophomore middle hitter Allison Reller was unanimously selected to the first-team.
Jaclyn, Katie and Allison made strong showings, playing above what most people would expect from underclassmen,” said Coach Nathan Harman.
At the district tournament held at Warrenton, the Lady Warriors made another strong showing and had a number of players recognized for their on-the-court ability. Lauren Weber, senior outside hitter, was a honorable mention selection with Lauren Tow, another senior outside hitter, named to the second team.
“Sammi and Lauren were pivotal players for us this season,” said Harman. “They were both captains, floor leaders and were there to get points when we really needed them. I am so proud I had the opportunity to coach them over the last couple of years.”
Winfield also came home with two first-team all-district selections, Burkemper and Reller was a unanimous selection.
“These two girls are amazing,” said Harman adding, “Katie played big as a freshman, playing as consistently and solidly as anybody on our team even though she was fighting a nagging injury all season. I think the other coaches voting her unanimously says it all. She is an outstanding volleyball player that has a ton of untapped potential. Our program is lucky to have a wealth of young talent with these two leading the charge. We expect great things down the road.”
