Troy expecting to control Conference, districts again

With four returning starters from a team that won 26 games and a district championship, expectations are sky high for the 2024-25 Troy Buchanan girls’ basketball team.

Troy Buchanan won its third consecutive district title last year before seeing its season end again in the state quarterfinals to perennial powerhouse Incarnate Word.

Regardless of how last season ended, Troy is loaded for a fourth consecutive district and another Gateway Athletic Conference championship thanks primarily to their three-guard attack of Grace Means, Ava Meyers and Mya Robinson.

As a freshman, Means played her way onto the All-State team, averaging 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game.

Meyers and Robinson were both first-team all district selections, with Meyers setting a school record with 100 three-pointers, averaging 12 points per game. She was also named the GAC South division player of the year. Robinson meanwhile scored 11 points and added three assists and two steals per game from the point.

Troy’s fourth returning starter is 5’10” forward Ellie Moore, a second team all-conference selection who finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds per game.

Coach Ryan Meyers, in his third season coaching the girls after a storied career coaching the boys, knows he can count on those guards for quick possessions on offense, but will also lean on them on the defensive side as well.

“We will pressure the ball and force hurried shots,” he said. “We will try to use our quickness on the defensive end to force turnovers and bad shots.”

Early in the season, this approach appears to be paying off as Troy has raced to a 4-0 mark, outscoring opponents by an average of 28 points while only allowing 32 points per game.

Robinson has led the team in scoring early on with 15 points per game while Moore is averaging a double-double at 12 points and 10 rebounds.
