Troy Girls Finish Fourth At State Tournament

The Troy Buchanan girls wrestling capped off a historic season with another first, returning home from the state championship with a fourth-place trophy.
Led by eight wrestlers, seven of which recorded wins, the Trojans followed-up their first district championship in school with their best performance as a team at the state meet in Columbia.
Zoey Haney capped her own remarkable career with a second place finish in the 100-pound weight class, falling just short of a repeat state championship.
Haney opened the tournament with a first-round pin over Adilyn Hoelzle, followed by a 16-1 technical fall over Juliana Tice from North Kansas City in the quarterfinals.
Haney again recorded a pin with 21 seconds left in the first period over Fort Osage’s Mikayla Stickler, setting up a finals showdown with Liberty’s Lilly Breeden.
The junior came into the match with an undefeated record of 52-0, including two pins and a technical fall in the state championships.
Haney battled in that final match, but failed to score, losing a 6-0 decision, finishing the season with a 53-4 record.
Three of Haney’s teammates also claimed their spot on the medal stand, including Freshman Addilyn Amos, who finished third in the 110-pound weight class.
Coming into the tournament with a 41-10 record on the season, Amos pinned Ozark’s Leticia Covello at the 4:36 mark in the opening round, followed by an 11-7 win over Anh Ngo in the quarterfinals.
Amos ran into a buzzsaw in the semifinals in the form of Camdenton’s Abigail Fuglsang and her then perfect 48-0 record. Fuglsang pinned Amos 32 seconds into the second period before winning the state title with a first-round pin.
Amos then pinned Addison St. George in the second period before claiming third place with 9-0 major decision in a rematch with Ngo.
Two other Trojans, Brooke Dollard (140 pounds) and Jeralyn Spear (235) both claimed fifth place medals.
Dollard, a senior, won her first two matches by fall at 1:17 and 5:15 to advance to the semifinals, where she was pinned 63 seconds into the match against eventual state champ Louis Juitt.
In the wrestlebacks, Dollard lost again with a first-round pin, sending her to the fifth place match. There, she defeated Nixa Senior Ava Frye by an 11-7 score.
Dollard finished the season with a 40-20 record.
Spear meanwhile capped off a 40-13 regular season three wins in the tournament to garner a fifth place medal as well.
In her first match, Spear pinned Madison Clover 71 seconds into the match. However, Grain Valley Junior Jayden Moehle sent Spear to the wrestlebacks with a pin 1:19 into the match.
Spear tallied her second pin of the tournament in her next match before losing in the semis by a 3-0 score.
In the fifth place match though, Spear recorded another pin 11 seconds into the third period over Ella Kimbrough.
Three other Trojan wrestlers recorded a pair of wins in the tournament, helping contribute to Troy’s overall team score and fourth place finish.
At 105 pounds, Madison Haney wrapped up her wrestling career with a pair of wins to finish the season at 38-15.
In her first match, Haney pinned Ashlee Dakin in 48 seconds. However, Haney had the unfortunate draw of the eventual state champ in the quarterfinals, Liberty’s Sandy Breeden, and lost to her by fall at 1:17.
In her next match, Haney bounced back with a technical fall (21-1) win over Ozark’s Emily Price before losing in the semis in 12-0 major decision.
A pair of sophomores, Haddley Dale and Molly Marischen, also came up one win short of a medal match at 115 and 155, respectively.
Dale won her first match over a North Kansas City senior, Elena Moore, by a 14-10 score. In the quarterfinals though, Smith Cotton’ Senior Jazlyn Smith-Freeman pinned Dale midway through the second period.
Dale came back to win her next match 7-3 over Rory Flores before losing 9-2 to another senior, Maya Saldivar.
Branson’s Alyssa Salemie, a freshman, finished second in the weight class and joins Dale as the only two underclassmen competing at state in the 115 division. Dale finishes the season with a 43-13 mark.
Marischen, also one of just two underclassmen at 155, won her first match with a first-period pin over Julia Dean.
Ellie Higginbotham, a sophomore from Willard High School, met Marischen in the quarterfinals and won the match with a second period pin. Higginbotham went on to win a pair of narrow decisions (5-4, 4-2) in the next two matches to win the state title.
After her first loss, Marischen rebounded with a win by fall over Raymore Peculiar’s Abby Keating, but lost in the next match by fall in the third period.
Hayden Scorfina also competed for the Trojans, losing her two matches.
While three seniors graduate from this year’s squad, Scorfina will be the lone returning senior next year with state championship experience on her resume. She finished the season with a 33-22 record.
In the team standings, Troy finished in the middle of a logjam in which two points separated second and fifth.
With Nixa cruising to the state championship with 139.5 points, last year’s champ and the team Troy beat to claim the district championship, Francis Howell Central, tied with Liberty at 88 points for second place. Troy checked in one point back with 87, followed by Belton with 86 points.
