Three Trojans Compete in Boys Wrestling Championship

COLUMBIA – Three Troy Buchanan boys’ wrestlers competed at the state tournament last week in Columbia, with two of them picking up wins.

Senior Blake Tharp started his final state tournament as planned, winning his first match with a pin midway through the third period over Northwest’s Jeremiah Clines.

After that first win though, Tharp suffered a pair of losses including a 21-5 technical fall in to Merrick Murray and then by a 8-1 score in the wrestlebacks to Rockport’s Tyler Abell.

Including his state tournament performance, Tharp finishes his senior season with a 33-13 record.

Austin Amos, wrestling at 144 pounds, had a pretty unlucky first round draw in Liberty’s Roman Stewart. Stewart on by fall in the second period and went on to win the state championship over another sophomore, Colin Rutlin, 8-4.

Amos bounced back though and won his next match with a pin 70 seconds in over Gokkhan Yurdanidze. Amos’ season ended in the next match though against Landen McDowell with a first round pin.

In his junior season, Amos finished with a record of 33-17.

Freshman Evan Killeen also got his feet wet at the state tournament, losing his two matches.

In the opening round, Killen lost by fall with one second left in the first period to Nixa’s Reed Wilson, who finished second in the 150-pound weight class. Killeen lost his next match by technical fall, 16-1, finishing his season at 23-13.
