'Halfway Through': 61/47 project making progress, Route 47 closed this weekend
TROY – The eagerly awaited completion of the U.S. Route 61 and Missouri Route 47 project is drawing nearer with an estimated target finish date of Nov. 1. But this weekend, there will be lane closures and anticipated delays with the removal of the southern side of the existing Route 47 bridge at the Troy interchange.
“We’re halfway through,” said MoDOT’s Jeffrey Niemeyer. “We did the north side first, and now we’re switching to the south side of the bridge because we did this bridge a half at a time just because we didn’t have a great detour for Route 47.”
As long as the weather cooperates, starting at 10 p.m. on Friday through 10 p.m. on Sunday, U.S. 61 will close to one lane in each direction with traffic redirected “over the on/off ramps at the interchange.” Additionally, per a statement from MoDOT, traffic movements from U.S. 61 to MO 47 at the ramp terminals will be limited to right turns.
According to a media release, the Route 47 bridge over U.S. Route 61 will close to all traffic at the interchange during this time. At the time of the closure, there will be a sign with detours. Those routes include:
-For those who wish to access U.S. 61 from MO 47, this detour: MO 47 (Eastbound/Westbound) will use a signed detour over East Cherry Street to South Lincoln Drive then northbound to MO 47 or southbound to the South Lincoln Drive interchange.
-U.S. 61 (Northbound) to MO 47 (Westbound toward Hawk Point) will use the South Lincoln Drive interchange to get to MO 47.
U.S. 61 (Northbound/Southbound) traffic will divert up and over the existing interchange ramps.
The U.S. 61 (Northbound) on-ramp at Old Cap Au Gris Road will shut down to traffic.
When the bridge removal is finished, work on the southern side of the bridge will start and traffic will be moved to the north side of the bridge. That reduces MO47 to one lane both directions and includes a 12-foot width restriction from North Lincoln to East Cherry. Left-hand turns will be permitted at ramp terminals and drivers traveling on MO 47 will use the center left-hand turn lane to get to U.S. 61 on-ramps.
“It’s an active work zone,” Niemeyer reminds motorists. “ We got lots of guys out there working, so with all these kind of traffic shifts, keep an eye out for the guys working out there and other cars because we do try to sign and detour people the best we can. It’s new for everybody so be patient and drive with caution.”
