CDY Boxers Compete at Golden Gloves

On Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22, five boxers from CDY Boxing competed in the St. Louis Golden Gloves tournament. Dating back to 1923, Golden Gloves is the most prestigious amateur boxing tournament in the country.

The St. Charles Boys and Girls Club hosted the event and boxers winning their preliminary bouts advance to the Finals, held April 4-5.

Competing this year:

Henry Daniels of Troy, 21, who is the team captain and has been training for almost 3 years. This will be his last competition as a Novice at 143 lbs.

Lucas Marlett of O’Fallon, 18, who has been training for 2 years and juggles pursuing a degree from State Tech in Linn, MO, training with former teammate of Coach Drew, Jesse Bryan of Gaines Boxing in Jefferson City, and traveling home to train on the weekends and holidays.

Jesse Nelson of Moscow Mills, 17, who has been training for 2 ½ years and recently advanced to State Silver Gloves. Jesse is a Junior at TBHS and will be competing as an Intermediate (under 18) for the last time.

Wyatt Broeker of Troy, 14, will be making his debut after only 4 months of training, competing at 121 lbs.

Callum Lee of Troy, 14, will also be debuting at 143 lbs but has been training for 1 ½ years.

Both boys are in the 8th grade at Troy Middle School.

Andrew Gnade of Troy, 38, was scheduled to fight but his bout was cancelled due to a lack of competition in his weight division. Gnade has been training for one and a half years and recently won his bout in Guns n Hoses, representing the Winfield Fire Department.

Coach Liz Drew has been training boxers since 2010, following a successful career as a professional boxer. Her program demands hard work, discipline, good grades, work ethic, community involvement/volunteer work and team support.
