Ellison Seeks Death Penalty in Todd Murder Case

An Eolia man accused of killing two people, including his own son, could end up being punished for the crime with the loss of his own life.

Pike County Prosecuting Attorney Alex Ellison filed a motion last week indicating he would be seeking the death penalty in the first degree murder charges filed against Matthew Todd, 52.

Todd is accused of shooting and killing Timothy Todd, 26, and Kaitlyn Potter-Navratil, 26, at his Eolia home in July 2024.

According to witnesses, the three individuals were arguing prompting Matthew to tell them to leave. When they didn’t, he fire three shots in the ceiling before shooting and killing both his son and his girlfriend.

The “Notice of Intent” filed by Ellison indicates he’ll be pursuing the death penalty specifically for the murder of Navratil.

“The murder in the first degree offense was committed while the offender was engaged in the commission or attempted commission of another unlawful homicide,” Ellison states, referencing the murder of Timothy Todd. The murdered individual (Navratil) was a witness or potential witness in any past or pending investigation or past or pending prosecution, and was killed as a result of her status as a witness or potential witness.”

After the shooting, Pike County officials immediately arrested Todd, without incident.

He has since been in custody on a $1 million cash bond, which his attorney is trying to get reduced.

Ann Marie Sekhon filed a motion Monday requesting the judge allow Todd to post 10 percent of the bond amount, or $100,000.

Circuit Judge James Beck will rule on the bond reduction request at a hearing Tuesday, May 6, at 1:30 p.m.
