Flynn receives DAR Women in American History Award

TROY – The late Katy Flynn, previous president and owner of Flynn Well Drilling Company, was recognized by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Troy Chapter, as a DAR Woman in American History.

The presentation was made at the May 17 meeting. Katy’s son and current president of Flynn Well Drilling, Danny Flynn, accepted the award in his mother’s memory.

The Women in American History Award honors women who have made a significant difference in their communities.

Flynn was selected for this award for her exemplary devotion to her family, her business and her community. In 1969, after the untimely death of her husband, Mike Flynn, she assumed the successful operation of the family owned well drilling business, as well as, raising six children.

Amidst numerous men who told her a woman could not run a successful business, much less a well drilling company, she persevered and grew the business, whose operation continues to this day.

Flynn was generous with her time and support of the Troy community. Her philanthropy extended to the local Catholic Church, FFA chapters, various civic auctions, fundraisers and anyone she thought was in need. She preferred to make her donations anonymously.

The Troy community has benefited from Flynn’s expertise as she served as a member of the Troy Chamber of Commerce, the Troy Business and Professional Women’s Club, the National and Missouri Water Wells Association and as a Charter Member of the Board of Directors of St. Joseph Hospital West.

According to a DAR news release, Flynn was an outstanding mother to her six children. She was very involved in their lives, volunteering as a 4-H leader, softball coach, den mother, and chaperone at teen dances. She raised competent adults by placing the children’s needs over her own personal life.

Flynn passed away Dec. 1, 1992 at the age of 58 after a long illness. In her memory, the Troy Business and Professional Women’s Club created the Katy Flynn Outstanding Business Woman’s Award which recognizes notable women in business or a profession.
