Old Monroe man charged with rape, incest

OLD MONROE – Sitting in a St. Charles County jail on a weapons charge, Joshua Dejaynes hoped to be getting his $10,000 cash-only bond reduced so he could go home.

“Sorry, honey. Hopefully, I’m out of here on the 19th in 9 days,” Dejaynes allegedly stated in a recorded phone conversation with his daughter from jail. “I should be getting out, I should be getting a bond reduction on the 19th, and I can get out of here, OK. I miss you, baby.”

Dejaynes, 39, didn’t receive that bond reduction as a few days after that phone conversation, Lincoln County officials charged him with raping and molesting that same daughter.

Law enforcement started investigating Dejaynes three months prior when in early December, the sheriff’s office received a call about an alleged sexual assault. The daughter was sexually assaulted by Dejaynes and other family members, the probable cause statement noted.

After interviewing the victim March 13, investigators were given a couple video recordings in which a family member confronts Dejaynes about his ongoing sexual relationship with his then 18-year-old daughter.

“You know how f***ed that … is? You’re f***ing your daughter. Do you,” Dejaynes was asked in the video.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don’t know how to put it in words. I don’t, I don’t know how to even put it in words,” he responded.

When questioned about getting help, Dejaynes responded, “I don’t know where to go to get help,” according to the probable cause statement.

Law enforcement interviewed the girl’s aunt, who stated she had “serious concerns about her niece’s welfare.”

At a Fourth of July gathering, she told investigators she saw Dejaynes and his daughter “holding hands” per the probable cause statement which “alarmed” her and was told Dejaynes was sleeping in the same bed as his daughter.

The daughter told detectives the abuse started shortly before her 16th birthday and routinely continued until her father’s most recent arrest.

Without consent, Dejaynes allegedly would take photos and video of his daughter, the probable cause statement indicated, including while showering.

“She explained her father would insist on having intercourse with her … If she refused, he would become angry and manipulative,” noted the probable cause statement.

In a phone conversation with his daughter while at the St. Charles Department of Corrections, Dejaynes told her “you have nothing to say,” when she told him she would be speaking to investigators.

On another call with his daughter, he communicates his affection.

“Hey baby. Hey, I love you. I’m sorry honey….I miss you, baby…I swear I love you. I love you more than anything on this planet, girl. I’ll have you in my arms soon, ok? I love you so much, though, honey. God, I love you.”

While there are no listed upcoming court hearings, Dejaynes faces the following charges:

  • Two counts of a class C felony of statutory rape in the second degree for having “sexual intercourse” with a person under the age of 17. The punishment can include a minimum of three years and a maximum of 10 years in prison.
  • Two counts of child molestation on the fourth degree with a child less than 17-years-old and the offender is greater than four years older. Each count is a class D felony and includes imprisonment of one to seven years.
  • Two counts of endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk — first degree — first offense — sexual conduct which is a class B felony and can carry a three to 10 year prison sentence.
  • Four counts of incest, a class D felony and for each count can have a one to seven year prison term.

According to court records, Dejaynes has what’s described as a “lengthy” criminal history, including felony drug possession, property damage, stealing, unlawful use of a weapon, kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child.
