TBHS Art Guild students paint murals for community

TROY – Art can evoke emotion, create connection, but more than anything it is a unique experience that can foster a sense of identity, enrich learning, revitalize a community, beautify spaces and spark imagination and awareness.
For TBHS Art Guild students, working on art murals in the community has been an opportunity to enhance a space with vibrancy for the maximum human experience and engage the public.

The murals that the TBHS Art Guild students have been painting this summer began about a year ago when three local entities reached out wanting to update their spaces,” said TBHS Visual Art Teacher Rosemary Ziegler. “First, our Drawing and Painting Two students received the design briefs from each location and set out to create proposals as a class project. These student-created documents included site images, historical research, materials lists and sketches.”
Then the real magic of bringing the murals to life started happening with designs being approved followed by the purchase of a projector to transfer the images funded by a LCR-3 Education Foundation grant. Then former and current Art Guild students started to hand paint the spaces.
The mural projects have included the Hawk Point VFW and Main Street Elementary.
Ziegler says the Hawk Point VFW mural pays tribute to those who have served. The mural will be unveiled Sept. 7.
“The Minutemen at this location have tons of ideas to revitalize this community space and welcome more veterans in the area. We hope that this painting will bring pride to those who see it,” she said.
For the Main Street Elementary mural, Ziegler says the primary objective was to promote engagement and school pride. The selected design is the school’s Lion Mascot “as well as images of outer space and classic playground games like hopscotch.”
Ziegler says there are more ideas for the backdrop and painting will continue to happen throughout the fall semester.
“The Art Guild has used these murals as a way to help our community and our club. The students are gaining hands-on professional experience by designing and creating murals,” Ziegler said.
The next painting mural project will be at the Iron Turbine in Moscow Mills with a classic route 66 style postcard design.
