Trojans finish second at 18th Troy Buchanan Classic

TROY – The Lady Trojans lived by the sword and died by the sword, finishing as close to a championship as they possibly could in the 18th annual Troy Buchanan Classic Saturday.

After coming-from-behind to win the first three games of the tournament, the Trojans squandered a two-run lead to Fort Zumwalt West in the seventh inning before losing the championship game 4-3 in extra innings.

As they had throughout the tournament, Troy trailed early, giving up a run in the first inning when Fort Zumwalt’s Kaelyn Thomas hit her sixth homer in the four-game tournament to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead.

That one-run lead stood up until the bottom of the fifth when Troy’s Kolie Fetter singled home a run and Maicie Kasper drove home two more to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead.

Cat Underboeck smacked a solo homer in the top of the seventh to cut the lead in half before Jenna Durk singled home Blayke Frownfelter to tie the game up and send it into extra innings.

The game remained knotted up at 3-3 until the top of the 11th when Kaylee O’Brien reached on an infield single, advancing to second on an overthrow. A successful sacrifice and a wild pitch later and the Jaguars held a 4-3 lead they wouldn’t lose.

St. Dominic 2

In the championship semifinals, Troy scored a pair of runs late to come from behind and beat St. Dominic 3-2.

Taking advantage of three St. Dominic errors, Troy took an early lead with a run in the top of the fourth before falling behind 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

But two runs in the top of the sixth gave Troy’s Grace Jacobsmeyer all the run support she would need, as she pitched the complete game win. She allowed two unearned runs on two walks and five hits, striking out three.

At the plate, Fetter, Kasper and Morgan Young all scored for Troy and Zoey Zidich hit a triple.

Troy-Buchanan 9

Hickman 4

In Friday’s pool play, Troy won their first game 9-4 over Columbia Hickman.

While the score appeared lopsided, it was back and forth throughout, with Columbia scoring a run in the top of the first and Troy tying the game in the bottom of the inning.

Troy took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second but Columbia-Hickman tied the game in the third and pulled ahead again 4-3 in the top of the fifth before Troy responded with five in the bottom of the inning and one more in the sixth to seal the win.

Kennedy Damron had a single and a double, driving home two in four at bats for Troy, while Kasper scored twice and stole a base with a double and a single. Zidich also finished with two hits, driving home three while scoring a run and stealing a base.

Highland 3

In the second pool play game of the day, Troy again rallied to beat Highland 7-3.

Highland took advantage of a pair of Troy fielding errors to score three unearned runs in the second and third inning off Avery Dennis to take an early 3-0 lead.

But the Trojan bats came alive with two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth before adding three more in the fifth.

Hunt and Dennis each drove home two with an RBI-double to lead the Trojan offense.

Dennis also pitched the complete game win, allowing just the three unearned runs on four hits and a walk, striking out eight.

Troy is back in action Tuesday, Sept. 9 in a road rematch against Fort Zumwalt starting at 4:15 p.m. The Trojans next home game is Wednesday, Sept. 10, against Washington at 4:30 p.m.
