Trojans split matches before weekend tournament

TROY – The Troy Buchanan Trojan volleyball split a pair of matches this week in preparation of their annual tournament Saturday.
Monday at Warrenton, Troy cruised to an easy win 25-11, 26-24 and 25-18. Mackenzie Anderson led the team with 15 points, seven kills and four aces. Evalena Wilke led posted a team-high 13 assists and 11 assists while Isabella Ruether with 12 points, six kills and four aces. Mollie Holl also recorded seven kills in the win.
Tuesday, the Trojans returned home for the first of three matches, losing a close one to a talented Liberty (7-3-1) team.
Liberty won the first two games 25-19 and 25-21 to take an early lead, but the Trojans came storming back to win 25-17 and 25-13 and even the match at 2-2.
In the tiebreaker though, Liberty downed the Trojans 15-12 to take the match 3-2.
Ruether led the team with 16 kills and 13 points. Evalena Wilke tied for a team-high 12 assists and added 12 points as well. Other top performers included Sydney Gutermuth with 12 assists, Holl with 10 blocks and Anderson with nine points, eight kills and six blocks.
The Trojans (4-9-2) are back in action Thursday night at home against St. Charles starting at 5 p.m.
Saturday, the Trojans host the Troy Tournament with matches scheduled at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. against Whitfield, Liberty and Hannibal.
