DONALD EUGENE GORDON

 Donald Eugene Gordon of Advance, NC passed away on Sunday, January 12. He was born May 10, 1932 at Overland, Missouri to Gola and Mariam Gordon. He lived in that community until 1948 when the family moved to Hawk Point, Missouri. Mr. Gordon graduated from Buchanan Highschool in nearby Troy in 1950. On April 22, 1956, Mr. Gordon married the former Miss Zona Lansche at the Hawk Point Baptist Church and enjoyed a long and happy union of 62 years. Mrs. Gordon passed away in 2019. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his sister LaVone Steiger. Surviving are three children, Phillip Gordon of Advance, NC; Robin Gordon Ben-Joseph (Jonah) of Spotsylvania, VA; and Nancy Chadwick (Chad) of Clemmons, NC; two grandchildren, Grace Chadwick and Charlotte Chadwick both of Clemmons, NC. Also surviving are nieces and nephews including Billie Jo Derham of St. Charles, Mo; Vicki Hubbard of Troy; David Myers, Boise, ID; Celeste Sanders, Vancouver, WA; Karen Hakes, Minnetonka, MN; and Ricky Crouch of Troy. Mr. Gordon served in the US Navy from 1951-54 during the Korean Conflict. Following his service, he graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia with a Bachelor of Journalism in 1959. Mr. Gordon pursued a career with daily news­papers which included the Kirksville Daily Express, MO; the Southeast Missourian in Cape Girardeau, MO; the Rockford Register Republic in IL; the Tulsa Tribune in OK; the Florence Morning News (Managing Editor) in SC; and the Paducah Sun (Editorial Page Editor) in KY. Throughout his long career, Mr. Gordon earned numerous journalism awards including several first-place state press associ­ation awards for editorials, personal columns and news writing. During retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon enjoyed travel with family and friends, resided in several states, and eventually made their home in Advance, NC. At the age of 13, Mr. Gordon made his initial Christian commitment and was baptized at Overland Baptist Church. Subsequently, he rededicated his life to the lordship of Christ and grew in his faith. Ordained a deacon in 1964, his ministries included prison and jail visitation, membership in the Gideons, nursing home ministries, and serving numerous times as Sunday School teacher throughout his life. Most recently, Mr. Gordon published a book “My 5-Minute Bible Studies 27 Adventures in the Old and New Testaments.” Over his lifetime, Mr. Gordon’s op­timism, integrity, and sweet sense of humor were a blessing to all who knew him, especially his family, close friends, and those he served through his many ministries. He will be greatly missed.
