Bryant resigns from Troy BOA

TROY – For the third time in less than a year, a Troy alderman has resigned.
Mayor Ron Sconce announced at the beginning of Monday’s regular meeting that Mitchell Bryant submitted his resignation effective Sept. 19 as the Ward Two alderman.
According to his resignation letter, Bryant and his family are moving out of the area.
Bryant defeated incumbent Steven Jones in April for the two-year term.
With the vacancy, Sconce will now attempt to fill the seat with a board-approved appointment, an exercise that has proven futile at times in the past.
When Kay Diekemper resigned in October 2024, Sconce made several attempts to appoint a replacement, but each one was rejected by the board with a 3-2 vote.
However, when David Norman resigned in February of this year, the board approved the appointment of Quentin Laws at the March meeting to fill the 13 months left on the term.
The amount of time left on Diekemper and Norman’s terms and the timing of their resignations were vastly different. Diekemper’s term expired in 2025 and consequently, voters were allowed the opportunity to elect a new alderman.
However, with Norman resigning in February, there would not have been time for candidates to be placed on the April ballot. So without Laws appointment, that seat would have remained open for more than a year until the 2026 election.
Should the board fail to appoint anyone to fill Bryant’s seat, it would come up for election in April 2026 to complete the one-year on the term. Aldermen Harold Horner, Laws and Rachel Dunard’s terms also are up in April, as is Sconce’s 4-year term as mayor.
